Become a Master Gardener! Class of 2020.
Thank you for your interest in The University Of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program. We are accepting applications until October 1, 2019 for the next training course, which will begin in January 2020. We are seeking adults in San Diego County who have the time and desire to help educate others, love to grow plants and want to learn more about horticulture. Inherent in the title "Master Gardener" (MG) lies the challenge to continue learning and to help other gardeners grow.
If you're up for the challenge and you'd like to join us, we are a fun and diverse group, and we come from all parts of the county. In order to strengthen our program and better serve our community, this year we are particularly seeking more applicants who can serve the coastal South County and inland North County populations. Also, we encourage bilingual applicants, especially those who speak Spanish.
Master Gardeners in Training embark on a 100-hour program of 18 classes over a six-month period beginning in January 2020. After graduation, each new MG must volunteer at least 50 hours to public education activities during the first year, helping to educate the public, and answering questions on home gardening and pest management.
After the first year, MGs are recertified annually after volunteering 25 hours and taking 12 hours of continuing education.
