Class Description
Participants will learn about many aspects of starting a honeybee colony and keeping it healthy and thriving. Participants will become knowledgeable about installing honeybee packages, monitoring their own colonies, and possible challenges with maintaining a healthy colony. Grasp the basics to get started with your own hive including costs, materials, regulations, and animal husbandry.
Leah Taylor
Leah Taylor is Program Coordinator for the UCCE Master Gardener Program of San Diego County. During her college years, Leah worked at the County Department of Agriculture, Weights, and Measures in the Entomology lab, identifying invasive insect species, and participating in the creation of new San Diego beekeeping ordinances. After graduating college with a degree in Horticultural Science, she conducted research on pollinators and honeybees for UCCE and UC Davis, as well as taught community education classes on gardening for health and wellness. In 2018, Leah added Master Beekeeper to her resume and continues to be very active within the UC California Master Beekeeper Program.
Leah is a passionate container gardener, mother of two, and enjoys spending as much time talking about insects as possible. Leah is working remotely but is based at the UCCE San Diego office in San Diego and can be reached at ude.rnacunull@rolyatael.
